This level 1 course introduces you to Russian culture and builds a solid foundation of your knowledge of the Russian language. In this course, you work towards language level A1-.

About Russian level 1

In this course, you will learn the basics of Russian through speaking and listening exercises and learn the characters of the Cyrillic script.

  • You will first learn the Cyrillic alphabet.
  • You learn four of the six cases of nouns (nominative, genitive, dative and locative) and verb conjugations in the present tense.
  • Speaking, listening and, to a lesser extent, writing skills are covered.
  • You are introduced to certain cultural aspects of Russia.

In Russian level 1 you will work towards language level A1-. Not sure what your language level is? Then take our free placement test.

Learning goals

In this course, you work towards language level A1-.

By the end of Russian 1:

  • You master the Cyrillic alphabet and can read Russian.
  • You can understand a conversation in outline (keywords).
  • You can introduce yourself, ask for directions, greet someone, order something, etc.

Method

  • In this course we work with the book ‘Paspoort voor Rusland’.
  • You can order the necessary materials for this course via our website’s Order Books page. You should make sure to have all required materials before the start of the first lesson.

Time investment

  • Russian 1 consists of 9 sessions of 1,5 hours at Babel in Utrecht or in the virtual classroom.
  • To ensure that you learn as much as possible from the classes, you should expect to spend approximately 2 to 3 hours per week on study and the completion of materials and assignments, which will be discussed during the classes.

Practical

  • The teacher will speak Russian as much as possible. Participants can ask questions in Russian or in Dutch.

  • You will receive a certificate if you attend at least 8 of the 9 classes.
