About German 5

The meetings are all about discussion. You will learn to communicate effectively and to argue your opinion. The topics of this course will be announced in advance and will mainly relate to current affairs, such as political or social developments.

  • In addition to discussing and arguing, we also put the finishing touches to formal language use and writing skills.
  • You practice using formal word combinations, choosing the right form of address and writing short and informative texts.
  • An integral part of this course is giving German-language presentations. You learn to deliver a German-language monologue confidently and to interact with the audience. In doing so, you will receive feedback from an experienced teacher and from your fellow students.

This course follows on German level 4, but can also be taken separately if you have B1+ level. Not sure what your language level is? Then take our free placement test.

Learning goals

In the German level 5 course you work towards language level B2-.

After completing this course:

  • you can confidently discuss with German-speaking interlocutors.
  • you will be well-prepared for living, working or studying in a German-speaking environment.

Method

  • The teaching method we use in this course is the book ‘Spektrum’ for language level B2. This book is specially developed for adult learners. In addition, it contains additional online exercises that allow you to practise with the lesson material.
  • Each lesson starts with discussing the previous meeting. After that you will work alternately in class, in groups or individually on interactive assignments. During the lessons, you will regularly practise your conversational skills in pairs.

Time investment

  • German 5 consists of 9 sessions of 1,5 hours at Babel in Utrecht or in the virtual classroom.
  • To ensure that you learn as much as possible from the classes, you should expect to spend approximately 3 to 4 hours per week on self-study. This is more self-study than in the lower-level courses. You will receive teaching materials and assignments for this purpose. During the meetings, you will of course have the opportunity to ask questions.
