Are you going to study at a German university? Will you start working for a German-speaking employer? Or do you often have to deal with German-speaking guests or business relations at work and would you like to brush up on your German language skills from secondary school? In the German level 1 course you will work towards language level A2.
About German 1
In this course you will expand your knowledge and skills of German with the following topics:
- In addition to the German language, you will also become acquainted with German culture.
- You will learn more about the main differences between Dutch and German culture.
- You will discover the cultural diversity within the German-speaking countries.

Learning goals
In the German level 1 course you work towards language level A2.
After completing this course:
- you can speak and write about everyday subjects in German.
- you will have developed a solid linguistic basis for further development.
- you are ready for German level 2.
Method
- The teaching method we use in this course is the book ‘Spektrum’ for language level A2+. This book is developed for adult learners. In addition, it contains additional online exercises that allow you to practise with the lesson material.
- Each lesson starts with discussing and briefly reviewing the previous meeting. After that you will work alternately in class, in groups or individually on interactive assignments. During the lessons, you will regularly practise your conversational skills in pairs.
Time investment
- German 1 consists of 9 sessions of 1,5 hours at Babel in Utrecht or in the virtual classroom.
- To ensure that you learn as much as possible from the classes, you should spend approximately 2 to 3 hours per week on self-study. You will receive teaching materials and assignments for this purpose. During the meetings, you will of course have the opportunity to ask questions.
Practical
- The teacher will speak German. So you will be immersed in the language you want to learn.
- You can order the necessary book for this course on our website’s Order Books page. The method contains a lot of (extra) online learning material. You should make sure to have the book before the start of the first lesson.
- You will receive a certificate if you attend at least 8 out of the 9 sessions.
