About this course

The following topics are covered:

  • shopping.
  • weather and seasons.
  • sports.
  • news and politics.

In this course, you will work towards language level A2/B1. The course is suitable if you have completed the Dutch Sign Language level 2 course or the NGT-AB1 course, or if you have achieved level A1/A2 through other means.

Learning goals

After completing the course you will be able to:

  • put yourself in the perspective of the other.
  • tell how he or she sees a certain situation.
  • use the productive lexicon, using other gestures or hand shapes depending on the context information about human and animal characteristics

Method

  • The material used in the lessons mainly comes from the Dutch Sign Center of the NGT-AB2 course. This method also has a digital learning environment, in which you can, for example, watch the homework videos and learn sign language.
  • The lessons are visually supported by images and video material.
  • The language of instruction during the lesson is NGT only.

Time investment

  • The course consists of 9 meetings of one and a half hours at Babel in Utrecht.
  • To ensure that you will benefit the most from the meetings, we ask you to spend approximately 3 to 4 hours per meeting on self-study. Babel will provide the course materials and assignments which will be discussed during the meetings.

Practical

  • The language of instruction during the meetings is Dutch Sign Language. Impersonation is also allowed if one does not know gestures. If there are times when it becomes difficult to gesture or depict it, drawing or writing in Dutch is also an opportunity to ask or clarify something. This is done in order to disrupt visual communication as little as possible.
  • The course materials are from the Dutch Sign Center and are included in this course.
  • You will receive a certificate if you have participated in 8 of the 9 meetings.
