• Sign language is not a universal language. There are more than 150 different sign languages worldwide, such as ‘Dutch Sign Language’ (NGT), ‘American Sign Language’ (ASL) and ‘British Sign Language’ (BSL). These languages differ from each other just as much as spoken languages.
• NGT has been officially recognised as a language in the Netherlands since 2020. This means that deaf and hard-of-hearing people have the right to information in their own language.
• Sign languages are fully-fledged languages with their own grammar. Facial expressions, body posture and movements are just as important as the signs themselves. They convey meaning and emotions, similar to intonation in spoken language.
