Virtual classroom vs. traditional classroom

You can currently follow our group and individual courses in two ways: in one of our virtual classrooms or on-location at Babel in a traditional classroom. Choosing can be difficult. Which option is the best for you? In which setting would you feel most comfortable? In this blog post, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both options.

Virtual classroom?

In the virtual classroom, you and your fellow students follow interactive, real-time language classes taught by experienced teachers. It is important to realise that this option is not the same as e-learning. When you follow an e-learning course, you watch videos, read the teaching materials and do online exercises, but do not have a fixed class time and do not interact directly with your teacher. The virtual classroom is best seen as the online version of a traditional classroom. If you want to know more about Babel’s virtual classrooms, you can read this blog or watch the demo below.

Virtual classroom vs. traditional classroom

1. Travel time
A large advantage of virtual classes is that you do not have to travel to get to them. You can follow the classes at work, home or anywhere else. Even if you have planned a holiday, you do not have to miss out! As long as you have a stable internet connection, you are good to go. This means that you will have more time for self-study or other activities.

2. Planning
Because you do not have to be physically present in the virtual classroom, it is easier to plan around the classes. This is perfect if you are busy! It is not required to be in Utrecht or even in the Netherlands to follow your language course. It is therefore no problem if you have planned a holiday, if you are staying a couple of days with friends or family or if you do not live in the neighbourhood.

3. Social
Do you enjoy meeting new people? Or have you recently moved to Utrecht and haven’t yet had the chance to get to know many people? Then choose classroom-based teaching. During the classes you get to know your fellow students and teachers more easily. After class you can perhaps get a cup of coffee and study together!

4. Distraction
Is it sometimes difficult for you to concentrate? Then it might be better for you to attend classes on-location, where you will have fewer distractions. Your laptop will be in your bag or at home and your phone won’t be in your hand. No digital distractions during the class! Your housemates or children also can’t distract you in a traditional classroom, meaning that you can completely focus on the class and won’t miss anything.
